- Jason Rubin said: July 22, 2007 COMIC WORLD NEWS has Tim Janson?s review of Iron and the Maiden #0: Issue #0 of Iron and the Maiden serves as the lead-in to the start of the regular comic series which premieres from Aspen MLT in August. In an alternate 1930s gang era setting, Michael Iron is a mob hitman whos turned into an unstoppable killing machine through the use of something called Roid 4.0. Angel Chase learns about Iron?s violent past in a flashback sequence; his boss, known as Big Daddy, eventually betrayed him and tried to kill him. This will set the stage for issue #1. Francis Manapul?s art (there?s that guy againis he busy or what!) is just beautiful and he is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Iron is like an action figure come to life under Manapul?s talented pencils. Pickup issue #0 and be sure to pick up issue #1 next month. This is sure to be a hot series! Grade A-

Battle Chasers inspired some of the art direction on Jak and Daxter and I had given Joe credit in game magazines when we launched the game in 2001. As an avid gamer, it was only a matter of time until Joe caught one of the articles. He sent me a thank you e-mail and said if there was anything I ever needed in comics to give him a call. 5 years later I started Iron and the Maiden and he was my first phone call. Joe, thanks for your incredibly inspiring designs of Iron and Angel and for introducing me to Jeff Matusda - Jason

A case of betrayal, and while I?ve seen this premise before, I do enjoy it and I?m eager to see what happens next. But the highlight for me was Manapul?s art. You need to check it out, especially if you like alternate history action. Think Cyberpunk mashed into 1938. Yeah. Brought to you by the guy that did Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter. Although, that doesn?t matter. The story is much more mature and cooler than either. And I love both of those videogame franchises." - Steve the Sicko, August 4th, 2007If you ask me, he ain?t no Sicko! Thanks for the props Steve the Saintly. - Jason

No indications of him moving even a single step are given, yet by the next page, he?s standing on a pristine floor, with no signs of what happened. Thanks to ICS.net?s Editor In Chief, Brecht for this nit, and for making me read this book. It?s got potential, and I like the mecha (that is, including cars) designs. NIT-O-METER: 8 Bazzars."

There?s a fantastic chase scene in issue #3 which I think the readers will really enjoy!" - Francis ManapulCheck out the Michael Turner Sketch cover of Iron at left- the man rocks! This is the hard to find cover for book 2
- Jason Rubin said: Francis is getting a lot of kudos around the industry and on forums for his art on Iron and the Maiden, and he definitely deserves it.Don?t foget that Joel Gomez backed him up on a lot of the backgrounds, especially in the early books, and worked alone on the incredible Page 0?s that establish the City at the beginning of every book. See the great overhead City Shot at left for an exampleAnd of course Danimation really finished things off with the colors.I figured you might like to take an look at some of the pencils from the Book 2 pages that NEWSARAMA recently showcased so that you can see Francis and Joel?s work untouched. Remember... there was no inker on the books, so this is what Danimation worked from!!! ဌ

- Jason Rubin said: CBR placed Iron and the Maiden #2 high on their "Buy Pile!""Jump from the Read Pile. Yes, you?ll have to get past the title to enjoy this -- so be it. "Scarecrow and Mrs. King" was dumb too, and that rocked, and how many people grokked "Burn Notice" before taking in the wonder of it? That aside, "The City" (could it be a precursor of Spider Jerusalem?s haunt? Probably not) continues to grow in complexity with a tasty Italian dinner (but don?t order the sausage), more inside information on how the world got to be this way (love the newspaper bit in the back, a la "Rex Mundi") and Angel Chase shows her naughty side. Really engaging writing by video game vet Jason Rubin, with great art by Francis Manapul and Joel Gomez (not to short Danimnation?s coloring). Imagine Mel Gibson?s "Payback" in the not-so-distant future, but with more cheesecake than just Lucy Liu. Fun stuff." - CBR

- Jason Rubin said: 3 FOR 3: For the third time in a row, Iron #3 is on the CBR buy pile! As one of the most popular and respected Comic sites, it?s quite an honor. Maybe we?ll stop sending Syndicate Boys by to make sure they do right by us!"There?s a chase sequence to start this issue?s second third that?s just fantastic, with coloring that pops and art work that?s kinetic. It?s followed by a look at a whole new section of The City, and the subsequent fight scenes are great as well. Each new character Michael Iron has to fight has instant charisma of the kooky antagonists in the movie "Running Man" or a new boss to fight on a high quality video game. This issue continues the mini?s very engaging pattern of drawing the reader in with nuanced characterizations and fantastic artwork. Not quite as much unabashed fun as "Highwaymen," but awfully close. " - CBR

- Jason Rubin said: NEWSARAMA prints praise of Iron and the Maiden #3. "Iron and the Maiden #3 is one of those great titles that Im referring to that doesnt say Marvel or DC. This is a marvelous book that smartly mixes 1930s gangster crime drama with a neo-futuristic setting. Its characters are pure caricatures of mob bosses and hitmen, colorfully wild and bold. Michael Iron was an enforcer for Big Daddy, sent to collect a debt from the father of Angel Chase. Iron is double crossed by his partner Sweet Joey. Joey kills Chase, and leaves Iron for dead and steals the money, blaming Iron. Iron is rescued by Angel and Dr. Lubicus who replace his severed arm with a mechanical one. Big Daddy is giving Iron 48 hours to come up with the million dollars hes owedand he knows Joey stole the money but its all crazy gangster law stuff. Meanwhile Big Daddy tells Joey hes got 48 hours to kill Iron. In the third issue, Michael is seeking help from another crime boss, Mushmouth who Iron counts as his only true friend. Joey is coming after Iron with everything, including the deadly assassins Deadpan Louie and Drop Dead Mike (ya gotta love the names in this book). While all this is going on, Angel is working at a strip club trying to get to the bottom of her fathers murder and proving herself more than a match for Big Daddys goons. I love the fact the Big Daddys organization took over a day care center called Baby Care and turned it into a strip cluball without changing the name of Baby Care. Ahthe irony! Francis Manapuls art is mesmerizing and hes quickly become one of my favorites. His art is incredibly dynamic. His visuals during action scenes are some of the best Ive ever seen and man, Angel is stunning swinging around that pole! Id be remiss if I did not mention the colors of Danimation that brings it all home. Now do yourself a favorput down that issue of Booster Gold, and back away slowly for the shelfslide down a bit and grab Iron & the Maiden..."- Newsarama

- Jason Rubin said: Iron is four for four!Iron and the Maiden Issue #4 Made into Comic Book Reources Buy Pile..for the fourth straight month! Here is what CBR had to say:Iron and the Maiden #4 (Aspen Comics) In the words of Xzibit, "so it all comes down to this ..." Michael Iron has one final apocalyptic showdown with Sweet Joey to settle all mob related business while the monolithic church looks on with anticipation and his unwanted partner leaps and stabs her way into the action and a less-than-reliable constabulary horns in as well. Unlike many comics that would center around one cavalcade of violence, there?s tons of characterization and story development that happens around the shooting and bleeding, including a look at the backstory on Drop Dead Mike, a hilarious exchange between Pony "Mushmouth" Moore and two recently renamed criminals and a great final commentary by Iron himself. WIth a nice "keep it coming" closing and art and coloring that practically levitates, this series is one of the best new surprises of the year.
- Jason Rubin said: The Comics Zone blog gave us a great writeup yesterday. You can check out the complete blog entry here:Iron and the Maiden #4Michael Iron, a hit man for the biggest crime family in The City, has had a change of heart, after Joey Petunia shot off his right arm with a shotgun and killed a gorgeous young ladies entire family. Set in the 1930?s in an alternate universe, The City is dominated by three competing factions. The Government, who is corrupt and leeching off the people, The Order, a religious sect vying for control of the city, and the Syndicate, the crime family of The City, run by Big Daddy. After the hit-gone-wrong, Iron teams up with the young lady, conveniently named Angel, who?s family was murdered by Sweet Joey. Together, they are on a mission to clear Iron?s name, and get back at the Syndicate. In this final issue of the debut arc of Iron and the Maiden, a lot of action goes on. Iron finally takes out Sweet Joey, pays off Big Daddy (though he finds that Big Daddy has placed another debt on him for destroying part of his belongings in the brawl), and gets the Order to "look the other way" on a few of the Syndicate?s doings. This won?t last long, however. The next arc comes out in January and I CAN HARDLY WAIT!

- Jason Rubin said: For the 5th straight month CBR Puts Iron and the Maiden in the BUY PILE Iron and the Maiden #0 (Aspen Comics) Stepping back a bit, this issue tells a story of Michael Iron?s first day as a dangerously enhanced extrahuman and the sort of destruction he can wreak. Normally the whole video game/comic book mix never works out, but despite the fact you can clearly see writer Jason Rubin?s console roots as his protagonists makes his way through "levels" to deal with "bosses," along the way he gives such room for characters to develop -- the guilt of Dr. Lubicus, the arrogance of Big Daddy, the simple violence of Michael Iron -- that every step of the road has something interesting for the reader. Which, of course, is not to short sheet the always interesting art of Francis Manapul and Joel Gomez, whose range from action to comedy to still moments of moon is a wonder to behold. Another gem from this creative team.

- Jason Rubin said: For the 6th consecutive book, Iron and the Maiden made CBR?s BUY PILE:"Iron and the Maiden: Brutes, Bims and The City #1 (Aspen Comics) Sketchbooks suck. It?s a fact. You get warmed over concept art and blah blah text and rarely anything worth your money. So when this great new series stops producing, you know, stories to do a DVD extra, that could give you some pause, right? Wrong. Because this isn?t any normal "behind the scenes" story. Apparently, writer Jason Rubin is one of the minds behind the "Crash Bandicoot" and "Jax and Dexter" videogame franchises who took all his chips at the height of his game and walked away. After locking himself away for months to write about this world he was intent on creating, Rubin then used the gobs of cash he had on hand to literally buy his way to quality. "Comic books don?t usually get pre-production work done before they start," Rubin wrote, "... the business model just doesn?t support the costs." Lucky for him he had a mountain of cash to use, and it shows. You can see the alarming, almost digital level of detail that he wrote into the work long before signing on powerhouses like Jeff Matsuda, Joe Madueira and Michael Turner, as well as "soon-to-be household names" Francis Manapul and Joel Gomez, as well as many others. Unlike your normal sketchbook, this is fascinating in the ways it depicts the world of The Order, The Government and The Syndicate with detail that you may have flown by in reading the series. Well worth studying and a good primer to get new readers up to speed on what?s happening." - CBR
- Jason Rubin said: So here?s a question: If a member of the original Iron and the Maiden team works with a non-member of the team on an uncommissioned piece of work inspired by Iron and the Maiden, is it Fan Art?
